If the coroner is involved…
We’ll guide you throughout the coroner process
As we have said before, we will be there for you and your family while all of the formalities are being carried out. This will certainly be the case if the coroner is involved. Occasionally, a death must be reported to the coroner before the doctor can issue the Medical Certificate needed by the registrar. This is most likely if the death was unexpected and a doctor may not be certain of the cause, for example:
Where the cause of death is unknown by the doctor
Where the cause of death is believed to be unnatural or suspicious
When the deceased was not seen by a doctor within 14 days before death
Where there is no doctor who can issue a medical certificate of cause of death
Where the death occurred during an operation, or before recovery from an anaesthetic
Where the death is due to industrial disease or industrial poisoning
Once a death has been reported to the coroner, the death can only be registered when the coroner has decided that no further investigation is needed.
Sometimes the coroner will give the doctor permission to issue the medical certificate and the death can be registered as normal. However, if the coroner decides to take over, the process will be different depending on each particular set of circumstances. If this happens, contact us straight away and we will guide and support you.
