When someone dies

We’ll guide you through what to do when the worst happens

A sudden bereavement can be shocking, and even when a family member or close friend has been ill for a while, it can still be an enormous blow when they finally pass away.

So what do you do? The first thing is to contact Kevin Matthews Funeral Services and we’ll guide you through the first steps and during the whole process. Our caring, supportive service will begin the minute you pick up the phone and call us. We’ll do all we can to make this difficult time a little easier. If you need help at any time, please call our 24-hour telephone number on 01604 792284.

First we’ll ask for preliminary details, whether your loved one has died at home or in a nursing or care home. We will guide you through the procedure of transferring them to our private chapel.

When someone dies at home, in a nursing home or in hospital, you’ll need to arrange for a doctor to fill in a Medical Certificate of Cause of Death. Then when you feel you are able, we will talk to you about the funeral arrangements. This can either be at our funeral home or we can visit you at home if that is more convenient. Please call us to make an appointment.

If the bereavement is sudden

If the death is unexpected, there’s a different process to follow. The emergency doctor or police will call in a specialist to find out exactly why and how the person died. This will be the Coroner here in England.

If these are the circumstances of the bereavement you have suffered, we will explain exactly what’s happening and keep in touch with the Coroner for you. If the person needs to be brought back to the UK, or brought from home from a different part of the country, we can make all the necessary arrangements for you.
